It is impossible to reflect on the truly great leadership that has been one of the real blessings to this nation without including George Washington's name in the list.In fact, in a top ten list of truly great presidents, Washington would almost certainly be at the top.His stature in American history is legendary and the respect Americans have for their first president is almost mythical. 

In fact, there are many myths and some humor about our first president that reflect people's love for this great leader.From quips about his teeth supposedly being made of wood to the thousands of places across the country that proclaim George Washington slept here, to the mythical tale of how he threw a silver dollar across the Potomac river as a child or his response when he was caught cutting down a tree to which he cheerfully replied I can't lie, myths about Washington run deep in the national memory of this great leader.

Washington never set out to be the greatest president of all time or even to be in a leadership position in the new country he helped found.He was the one who came up with the concept of a citizen president and he believed in the concept so much that he refused to run for a third term because his time as a citizen leader was over.This tradition was maintained with few exceptions until it was finally codified as part of our constitution in the form of the 22nd amendment.
